Welcome to the schedule for Katsucon 19 in 2013!
Katsucon is an annual 3-day fan convention held in the D.C. metro area for multicultural enthusiasts and entertainment. Katsucon is produced by Katsucon Entertainment, Inc. (KEI), a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit organization dedicated to bringing information about Japanese animation, society, and traditional and popular culture to fans everywhere.
This is a timeline of Japanese cross-cultural trade. It highlights how Japan and the US have traded ideas back and forth since the Meiji restoration, including film, music, zombies, animation, comics and other, less well-known representations (like wrestling and fashion). It is structured as a sort of "game of telephone," with each side borrowing ideas, altering them, then presenting them in new forms of media and consumption. It also discusses Douglas Gray's "Cool Japan" essay, Roland Kelt's Japanamerica thesis and touches upon the historical "identity crisis" Japan has dealt with in the past few centuries.
